Starbucks frappuccino

I consider myself a “coffee guy” because I usually have three to five cups of coffee on most days. However, there are days where I want to stay away from coffee.

You could be like me, or you totally do not like coffee, or you are looking for non-coffee drink options for your kids and you are not sure about how to order for a Starbucks Frappuccino with no coffee.

Whenever I want to stay away from coffee, non-coffee frappuccinos are my go-to drinks because of their rich and diverse flavors.

What Is A Frappuccino (Frapp)?

Frappuccino brand is a Starbucks trademark and is one of the most popular drinks on the Starbucks menu. A frappuccino is either crème based or coffee-based. Ingredients such as a base syrup, milk, ice, and flavored syrups are blended and topped with whip cream and syrup drizzle to make a frapp.

To order for a Starbucks frappuccino with no coffee, ask for a syrup crème frappuccino of your choice. You can go with a standard frapp or you can opt to customize your frappuccino to suit your desire. However, note that although the syrup crème frappuccinos have no coffee, some contain caffeine and they include:

  • Double Chocolatey chip crème – 15 mg caffeine per 16 oz
  • Chocolate cookie crumble crème – 15 mg caffeine per 16 oz
  • Chai crème frappuccino – 40 mg caffeine per 16 oz
  • Matcha green tea crème – 70 mg caffeine per 16 oz

Syrup Crème Frappuccino VS Coffee Frappuccino: What Is The Difference?

Creme-based frappuccino ingredientsCoffee-based frappuccino ingredients
1.Creme base. Regular base that is sweetened with sugarCoffee base. Regular and lighter bases available. The lighter base has about half the calories in the regular option per pump
2.MilkMilk
3.Flavors such as syrups, sauces and dry ingredientsFlavors such as syrups, sauces and dry toppings
4.IceIce
5.Toppings such as whip cream, syrup drizzle, and dry toppingsToppings such as whip cream, syrup drizzle and dry toppings
6.No frapp roast. Some creme frapps are not caffeinatedFrapp roast – a form of instant coffee that is made by mixing a coffee-like powder with water. Coffee frapps are caffeinated

The two main differences between crème and coffee frappuccinos are

  • Creme frapps use a creme base while coffee frapps use a coffee base. The base is a sweetener and is the foundation of the drink and when blended with ice gives it a nice consistency and homogeneity. The coffee base is available in regular and light versions. The light version has approximately half the number of calories in the regular base per pump.
  • A coffee frappuccino ingredients include a frapp roast that is a special type of unsweetened coffee concentrate that is mixed with water and blended with the other ingredients. You can request for an espresso frappuccino so that the barista replaces the trap roast with the appropriate number of shots of espresso.

Important Tip

Using an espresso for your frappuccino before blending affects the texture and taste of the drink. A hot espresso makes the drink runny.

When making a frappuccino at home, I prefer blending the other ingredients separately and pouring the hot espresso over the blended drink so that the espresso melts through to create a nice smoky appearance.

The syrup and sauce vary depending on your preferred flavor, for example, chocolate, caramel, or strawberry. Dry toppings include chocolate chips, cinnamon, and dried fruits.

How To Customize Your Frappuccino

When it comes to crème-based and coffee-based drinks, we all have our preferences in terms of the intensity of the coffee, decaf, amount of sugar or sweeteners, and the number of calories that we desire. At the end of the day, all we want is to enjoy our favorite drink in the best way that we can.

Whether you are ordering from a coffee shop or you are making your frappuccino at home there are several ways to customize your frappuccino.

If ordering from a café, explain to the barista about what you are trying to accomplish; probably you want to swap, add, or to avoid some ingredients. The barista will help you to choose the right ingredients as well as the right quantities to meet your goals.

Here are some of the choices that you can go with to make your frappuccino healthier.

  1. Avoid or reduce the whipped cream. Cuts about 80-110 calories from the drink.
  2. Choose milk with fewer calories such as low-fat milk, soy or almond milk
  3. Use sugar-free flavoring syrup
  4. Ask for fewer pumps of the base syrup to lessen sweetness and calories. For the coffee base, you might opt for a lighter base that has fewer calories than a regular base.
  5. Ask for lighter or stronger coffee or decaf espresso instead of the frapp roast
  6. Vary the size of the cup. Starbucks frappuccino cup sizes range from Short 8 oz, Tall 12 oz, Grande 16 oz, and Venti 24 oz. The Trenta 30 oz size is usually for iced coffees and teas. Generally, a smaller cup uses lesser amounts of syrup and whip cream and has fewer calories
  7. Adding more ice will make the drink thicker and less ice makes it thinner

FAQs

Is A Frappuccino Hot or Cold?

Frappuccino is a cold drink that involves blending ice cubes with other ingredients such as milk, a base syrup, coffee-in the case of a coffee-based frappuccino, and other flavorings depending on the type of frappuccino.

Why Can’t You Have A Hot Frappuccino?

A frappuccino, by definition, is a cold drink and the smooth texture is achieved by blending all the ingredients with ice. It is impossible to achieve the same texture with hot milk or a hot drink.

What Is The Meaning Of “Double Blended” In Starbucks Frappuccino? When Is Double Blending Necessary?

Double blending means that the frappuccino has been blended twice. The blenders in Starbucks have buttons that are connected to a timer that determines the consistency of the drink after blending.

When making a frappuccino, the barista starts blender and the blender runs for the set amount of time to achieve proper consistency. Pressing the button again is essentially blending the drink again to make it smoother and easier to drink. The resulting drink is a double blended frappuccino.

Some frappuccinos such as java chip, chocolate cookie crumble and mocha cookie crumble may require double blending to break up the chocolate chips.

What Is The Difference Between Latte And Frappuccino?

A frapp is a cold blended drink that contains a crème or coffee base, ice, milk, flavored syrups, and other ingredients depending on the type of frapp. It might also have a whip cream topping that is drizzled with syrup. Crème fraps have no coffee and some have no caffeine.

A latte or café latte is either hot or cold. A hot latte is an espresso with frothed milk and a thin microfoam at the top.

A cold latte contains ice cubes, cold milk, and a double shot of espresso and no foam. Both hot and cold lattes can be flavored by adding syrups such as vanilla, chocolate, or caramel.
